SEE THE RISING TIDE KNOW IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME WORLDThis is a timeline of Earth in which the people pretty much destroyed each other in a panic over a disease. Not much of our Earth’s history is left by this time, a lot of books and computers destroyed. Welsley’s country (known as Loren then, but England, in our time.) is ruled with an iron fist. The disease (known as Mill’s disease, and eventually fatal) still is a big problem, but the people behind the dictator, Howell Rowe, have come up with a formula to hold off the progression of the disease. That’s how he came into power, and a lot of people are too scared of dying to say anything about his aggressive policies, the way he’s cut people off from the outside world in the name of health. The borders are heavily patrolled, and it’s almost impossible to get across. So most of the resistance happens within the country, in the countryside, though rebels are placed within cities. There are actually some agents of the government that are infiltrating the resistance, but this isn’t known by the resistance yet. This new world is more about survival, most people never knowing true peace and comfort. In Stinton (the city), people’s homes are often searched for illegal substances, rebels, or sick people. Most of the tech is government-owned. One huge deviation from our Earth is that magic exists in this world. The time machine they use to send Welsley back is ‘science’ to them, but Welsley frequently has visions and dreams. Most people in this world think magic is made up, so it’s not widespread. The other setting, of course, is Victorian England. The year is 1869. It’s exactly our Victorian England, with the addition of magic (not widespread but of more interest in this time) and time travel (it exists, but no one but the people from the future are aware of that). The resistance has sent back quite a few rebels, ingraining them into society before Welsley’s arrival. So they’ve changed some things in the timeline, which has resulted in: changes in the population numbers, having some higher-up people be on their side, some different places being taken at different times. They’re lucky it hasn’t been worse. HISTORY➔ Welsley was born in the countryside with the resistance. His parents raised him to be a soldier until they separated when his father cheated on his mother. His father and his girlfriend went on assignment in the biggest city in Loren, Stinton, and had his half-sister, unbeknownst to Welsley. His mother continued to train him, up until she died (when he was in his early twenties). Around then, Welsley started having dreams and visions. ➔ Welsley was brought in on a plan. Rowe’s people were changing things via time travel, and had used the time travel to see the future, see who will lead the resistance to victory. They pinpointed that person’s ancestor, and the resistance wanted to protect him then. They sent back rebels to integrate them into society for Welsley’s benefit. Welsley will make friends with and protect the ancestor. He cannot return to the present time. ➔ He became best friends with Mary in training before she was sent back in time. At age 31, he was ready. He was trained and he studied Victorian England like crazy, worked on his accent, his cover, his charm, his manners. He contacted some of his rebel contacts so that he could be seen at parties. Brandon, the guy he was in charge of protecting, was rebellious (in the sense that he did the opposite of what his father wanted, not that he was part of the rebellion) and wild. He made friends with him by being a bit wild. He also noticed Brandon’s sister, Cora, who was clever and beautiful. ➔ While Welsley didn’t have too much trouble blending in, he did have trouble feeling happy about his decision. A woman showed up soon after that, hinting that she knew more than she should. He investigated, but he couldn’t find much on the woman. Wesley stopped attacks, just barely managing to avoid doing it in front of Brandon. ➔ He settled into his ‘uncle’s’ beautiful home in London. He occasionally had visions or feelings about the past owners, the family that died. His guilt over taking advantage of the situation grew, along with his restlessness and uneasiness. He and Cora became friends, and he felt the beginning of sparks. But it was not part of his mission to marry, so he avoided anything that would make her question his intentions. ➔ Mary was targeted by the bad guys, and Welsley just barely got her out of there. They had advanced weaponry now, so either they held back at first, or they had a way to the future. One of his rebel contacts was a doctor and he went to him with Mary. The doctor promised to take care of her. Welsley got a weird feeling about him, but ignored it for the moment, since he had a lead on the bad guys. ➔ The guy in charge of the mission had given him a name, Martin, in charge of Rowe’s people that were trying to kill Brandon, and Welsley hunted him Martin down, threatening him, but he was a bit of a pathetic seedy man, begging for mercy and stating his innocence. The mysterious woman from earlier broke into his home to talk alone. She revealed she was his half-sister and that her mission had something to do with Brandon before she left his home. This is the point in which Welsley is approached about Zhautas. PERSONALITYCharming: Welsley has to be charming for this job. There are lots of parties, where he’s expected to be charming and interesting. Plus, he has to make friends with Brandon for the job. He charms Cora with his teasing when they first meet, joking with her. She appreciates the humor. He charmed Brandon with his willingness to be a little wild, when they race horses when they first meet. Setting people at ease is his goal, and so is making someone laugh. He jokes a lot with Mary, his best friend, and it’s how they get through some of the difficult training they have to go through to go back in time. And he’s able to entertain a room of partygoers with a made-up funny story while he’s trying to keep Brandon from getting attacked for the first time. Kind and polite: He’s a generally polite and kind person to strangers and friends alike. He’ll be polite even in the face of a rude person… to a point, of course. He’s very polite to Cora and Brandon in the beginning (and the rest, but especially in the beginning). He does a decent job of being a proper gentleman. While some classism is hard to escape, Welsley is kinder than some, friends with people from all classes. He can be rough and threatening, but it isn’t really him. Intelligent: He’s a huge history buff (from what he can glean from any sources and from time travel training), as well as a pretty intelligent man. He enjoys discussing books whenever he can get his hands on them, and learned his training on Victorian England pretty quickly and smoothly. He soaks up knowledge a lot, eager to learn whatever he can from whoever. Stubborn/Patient/Slow-moving: Welsley takes his time with decisions. He researches, he thinks, and then he acts. This can be rather frustrating to his friends. He’s in it for the long haul with the entire mission of going to Victorian England. He’ll have to pretend to be someone else for the rest of his life. He thought about this for about half a decade before deciding he was ready. His parents were also stubborn in getting what they wanted, with a huge sense of duty. He’s slow to even take such a huge mission growing up, not even entertaining it until his mother died. Later in the story, he’s slow to even admit his feelings to himself about Cora. While sometimes he overthinks, it means he doesn’t make a lot of rash moves. Sticks to the rules: While he doesn’t stick to the laws, he sticks to the rules of his mission pretty strictly. This is the main reason that he doesn’t attempt to romance Cora, or anyone for that matter. It might compromise the mission or the future. The mission is pretty strict on his life and his identity, and despite him having to live in the past for the rest of his life, he adheres to the rules throughout his stay (so far in the story), not revealing his true identity even though he’s lying to people he genuinely feels close to. He tries not to affect the future in a bad way, careful to protect even a random passerby who gets caught in the crossfire of one of his fights with Rowe’s men. Loyal to a fault: There isn’t much Welsley wouldn’t do for his friends, from his time and also Cora and Brandon. He has genuine affection for them, attaching easily to them even when he’s a bit frightened he’ll lose his friends as easily as he lost his mom. He was pretty scared when Mary got attacked, only leaving her side for the mission. While this could be seen as a good thing, it’s sometimes a really bad thing for Welsley. It’s why they attacked Mary, thinking they might scare him off through his friends. He might prioritize his friends over the future, if pushed to a decision about that. He feels a bit shameful about it, but he’s shown his friends are more important than his mission, like when he allows Cora to tag along with him and Brandon. He should be trying to get Brandon closer to him the most, but he does enjoy his friendship with Cora. Iffy morals: While he tries to be a good person and abide by the mission’s rules, he’s not altogether a great person. He’s willing to lie, steal, cheat, and threaten to get his way in this mission, shown in the example of him threatening Martin to get him to talk. And while he has guilt over lying to his friends, he doesn’t stop doing it. To him, it is necessary and excusable. He’ll kill Rowe’s men if they attack him or his friends with zero remorse, and does so in most of their fights. He’s a rough man, despite his manners and intelligence. He’s willing to do what needs to be done for a better future, no matter what it costs him morality-wise. He’s not an evil man, by any means, but his morals are a little questionable when it comes to what he does for the mission. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
